NINE POUND HAMMER
is Mark Selby at his rockin’, bluesin’ best. Selby and his
world-class Nashville-based band return to the powerful, pure
sound of his internationally-acclaimed debut album MORE STORMS
COMIN’, expand on it, build on it and basically “rip the roof
off the joint”. “A couple years ago I was lucky enough to put
together my dream band, with Daryl ‘DB’ Burgess on drums and
Charles ‘Chopper’ Anderson on bass: we’re like blood-brothers
who were always meant to make amazing music together. I wanted
to make a new record that really rocks, a record that lets
this band do what it does best – a high-wire balancing act of
power and subtlety, incredible musicianship and complete wild
abandon. So I wrote songs that would let us do that. Now we’re
just itchin’ to play this stuff live!” With multiple
Grammy-winner Brent Maher again producing, Mark Selby delivers
his strongest singing, guitar playing and songwriting to date,
and has created a new work that leaves no doubt: NINE POUND
HAMMER hits hard.

On a
handful of occasions in late 2005, I sat down in front of a
couple of microphones with my oldest pal, the horse I rode in
on: my trusty 1974 Mossman acoustic guitar. I punched the red
button on a little recording machine and played some of my new
songs, some of my not-so-new songs, and a few of my favorite
songs. Here and there a friend joined in, and once or twice I
added a second guitar later, but this is basically "Moss" and
I (we share the same nickname) "live" in the living room,
warts and all. Listen close and you'll hear trains, dogs,
squeaks, rattles-and my better half Tia knocking at the front
door (to her own house). I'd like to tell you that it was a
labor of love or a long-awaited dream come true making this
CD, but truth be told, it's just what the ol' Mossman and I
do---and plan to keep doing for a long time. The musical
equivalent of two fellas who meet in the park everyday for a
friendly chess game. So pull up a chair, make yourself
comfortable, open that bottle you've
been saving. Here's to you...and the horse you rode in on.

The follow-up to
Mark Selby's critically acclaimed debut "More Storms Comin'"
is another collaboration co-produced by Mark and Grammy
award-winning producer Brent Maher. Dirt
features 11 new Selby compositions and plenty of Mark's
trademark searing guitar and soul-searching vocals, along with
some truly inspired musicianship from the band and special
guests. This CD finds Mark exploring new musical textures and
lyrical themes, building on the soulful strengths of "More
Storms" and moving to higher ground.
A
combination of blues-infused guitar style and soulful lyrics
can be found on the debut album from singer/songwriter and
guitarist Mark Selby. Like the instruments he loves to play,
the honest, organic music on More Storms Comin',
has that same complexity and character. From the rock 'n' roll
workouts of "Kink in the Chain"
and the catchy first single
"She's Like Mercury" to the elemental life-and-death
blues songs, "Down by the Tracks" and "More Storms Comin'" to
the purely soulful "I'm the Lucky
One," the album captures Selby's stellar musicianship and
energy of his live performances.
